Hemorrhoid symptoms can vary. Hemorrhoid symptoms, however, can resemble those of serious issues like colorectal cancer and other colon and rectal issues, especially when there is rectal bleeding.

Hemorrhoid Symptoms

  • Bleeding
  • Itching
  • Pain outside of rectal area
  • Pain inside of the rectum
  • Pressure

The most common symptom is bleeding during a bowel movement. The color will be a bright red on your toilet paper.

Another symptom is itching in the anal area or pain.  You may also notice a lump which can be very sensitive at the opening of the anus.

You may feel pressure or feel like you want to have a bowel movement.

Rectal pain can be another symptom of hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoid Types

There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external. Everyone has the potential for developing hemorrhoids because these are the veins of the anus and rectum which can become enlarged to form a bulging blood vessel or hemorrhoid.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids inside of the anus may produce painless bleeding, or they may cause severe pain and have become “prolapsed.” That means the hemorrhoid protrudes from the opening in the anus and cannot be pushed back inside, causing great rectal pain.

External Hemorrhoids

These hemorrhoids are outside near the anus and are usually painless.

However, an external hemorrhoid that forms a blood clot can turn into a hard lump that can be extremely painful. This is called a thrombosed hemorrhoid.

Hemorrhoids near the anus are covered with sensitive skin. If the hemorrhoid ruptures, this can cause pain and bleeding.
